FOOTBALL: Week 2 wraps with Rockmart squeaking out win, Cedartown falling on the Road

Week by week, there are always winners and losers in every matchup in every sport. One team gets to shine in the brief glory of victory, and one teams gets to take in the pain and learn from falling short.

Rockmart and Cedartown were both in action on Friday night, and the outcomes were a mixed bag all around.

The Jackets squeaked out a win in the fourth quarter as a two point conversion closed out their long, hot night at home. The Bulldogs fell on the road to Callaway in a rematch from 2022 where the Bulldogs ran roughshod over the Cavaliers.

Here’s where things stand after Week 2 as both squads stand at 1-1 after the heat of battle leaves everyone exhausted. (Yours truly included.)

Rockmart wins 24-23 over Cass

The Rockmart Yellow Jackets and the Cass Colonels don’t have much of a history with one another, but they might become future rivals after this 24-23 victory saw Cass fall short, and Rockmart hold on.

Rockmart scored early and held onto a 3-0 victory through the first quarter, and added a touchdown in the second with hopes to head into the locker room up by two scores. Nahzir Turner got a big push from the offensive line to get in to go up 10-0.

The Devin Henderson touchdown on the ensuing drive after Rockmart’s first touchdown put the game at 10-7.

A blocked Jose Alegria field goal almost got the Jackets in trouble going into halftime, and a miss in the third quarter also set Rockmart back.

Then a Turner fumble, a Cass field goal and a tie ball game ignited both teams to kick on the afterburners in the fourth quarter. The Colonels put up 13 in the last 12 minutes of the game, and Rockmart added a second Brent Washington touchdown to hang on for the win.

The Jackets did hang on as Cass got close to the tie for overtime and went for a two-point conversion for a one point win. The Colonels missed on the pass play between Brodie McWhorter and Sacovie White.

The Jackets finished this game with 303 total yards of offense. Davis under center went 9 for 12 and 150 yards, most of those going to Jake Bailey. He grabbed 6 passes for 100 yards on the night. Washington headed up the team in rushing yards with 13 carries and 75 yards.

Rockmart now at 1-1 heads into the bye week before they host Dalton for Week 4 of the football season. Historically, they sit at 10-1-1 against Cass. This is their second game in the 2020s, with the Jackets last losing to the squad in 1981 before their last meeting.

If they schedule each other again in 2024, this one could get interesting. Let’s hope they do.

Cedartown falls on the road to Callaway, 27-10

No one likes to lose, especially those beloved hometown Dawgs when they are traveling to show off their talent to out of towners.

The Bulldogs headed back home on Friday night from LaGrange having faced Callaway and just falling flat in the 27-10 loss.

Cedartown put up their only 10 points in the first quarter as Callaway first chipped away at the lead, then knocked the Bulldogs out of contention after two touchdowns added in the second quarter, and one more to top that in the fourth.

Callaway got Cedartown’s number when it comes to offensive yards. Per stats available, the Bulldogs rushing corps managed only 27 carries combined for 143 yards. Tae Harris only had 35 of those yards, but scored the squad’s only touchdown in the loss.

Cedartown has no time to dwell on the loss as now they have another road trip ahead this Friday at Sequoyah. This is a return game for the Bulldogs as well who they defeated in Week 3 on a season-long trail of an undefeated streak all the way into the title game.

The Chiefs fell hard to Rabun Gap on Friday in a 39-6 rout on the road. Sequoyah sits at 0-2 on the season so far, with a week 1 loss to Lambert on their record as well.
