BASKETBALL: Cedartown boys have tough road ahead in Class 4A playoffs

The Cedartown Bulldogs are playoff bound, but finishing in the fourth seed spot means they have a tough road ahead to get deep into the tournament as Class 4A teams open their second season this week.

Cedartown travels to face 6-4A first seed and region tourney winner Holy Innocents when they hit the road on Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. tipoff against the Golden Bears.

The Bulldogs finished at 13-15 for the regular season and into the region tourney for 7-4A, and scraped by over Northwest Whitfield to gain the fourth seed but fell in subsequent play to Central Carroll and Heritage.

Cedartown’s facing a tough Holy Innocents squad this year. The 22-6 Golden Bears went 18-1 in region play this year against 6-4A opponents, taking a 64-53 victory over Westminster to secure the region title and the top seed heading into the first round of the playoffs.

The Bulldogs if they have any hope in this one will be relying on a stopping Golden Bears’ junior Caleb Wilson, who averages 21.1 ppg this season and sophomore Devin Hutcherson, who is 62% on field goal percentage and putting up a 15.1 ppg average. Senior Will Hopkins also is making a mark and put up 13 points per game.

Cedartown if they are able to come out on top would travel to face the winner of Walnut Grove-Pace Academy in the second round. Beyond that there is Bainbridge as the top team from Region 1, Sonoraville and Westover to face if they made it to the final four, and the likes of North Oconee, McDonough, and other powerhouses in Class 4A out there looming as threats deep into the playoffs.

Check back for an update later this week on the Bulldogs’ first round game.
