Rockmart’s Coach Vic Calhoun announces he’s stepping down from head of boy’s basketball program

After a six season run leading the Rockmart Yellow Jackets to more victories than losses, Head Coach Vic Calhoun announced he was stepping down as the head coach of the boys basketball squad on Friday.

He put up a 93-68 record overall and the team went to the playoffs four out of the six seasons during Calhoun’s career as the head coach for the Jackets.

Coach Calhoun posted the following on FB:

Jacket Nation and #RockmartHoops family, I would like to announce my resignation as your head basketball coach, but also to say THANK YOU!! You welcomed my family to Rockmart six years ago with overwhelming and unwavering love and support. Rockmart is a special place to live, teach, and coach basketball (because of you all!!) and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have been your basketball coach. Together, we have celebrated the successes of Region Championships, State Playoff victories, Christmas tournament championships and many wins at home and on the road. I’ve been blessed to witness players overcome adversity, gain confidence, and mature as young men. All those memories will be forever cherished. Though I will miss sharing those experiences with you all, I am excited to be less ‘Coach’ and more ‘Dad’ for a while!

He began his tenure in 2018 with a team poised for opportunity. Rockmart in a 7-AA with many of their traditional area foes and went 17-10 overall during his first season. The top team in the 2018-19 season went 13-1 in region play and lost a close region title game to Chattooga in overtime 61-52. Rockmart still earned a first round playoff win at home over Hapeville Charter, but were forced to travel to Elbert County for a second round loss.

The 2019-2020 campaign wrapped up an 18-11 season where the Jackets went 11-3 in Region 7-AA, and took the team to the third round of the playoffs with wins over Jordan and Northeast, but lost to Swainsboro in Elite Eight.

A two-year drought in 2020-21 and 2021-22 as the Jackets fought but were stung in 6-AAA basketball competition. They went 6-16 overall (4-13 in region) in their first year in a loaded 6-AAA, and rebounded at 17-9 overall in the 2021-22 season, going 10-6 in region to finish in third place, but lost to Ringgold in a 6-AAA Tournament finish and got knocked out of playoff contention in the loaded region.

After the move back to Class AA, Rockmart went 15-14 overall, 8-5 in region to finish in fourth place in 7-AA, and were on the road in the first round against PCA in the playoffs.

The squad went 20-8 overall in the 2023-24 season, going 8-4 and finishing third in a punishing basketball region and getting to a first round playoff game at home after a second-place region tourney finish.
