Rockmart sweeps Franklin for first state title
Franklin County just couldn’t stop a hot Rockmart squad who blew through the Class AA playoffs to finally reach the mountaintop on Wednesday.
The Yellow Jackets brought home the gold with a clean sweep of the Lions at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome during the state title doubleheader to close out the baseball season. Rockmart won with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Franklin County
Rockmart took an early lead in Game 1 and never looked back, adding a pair of runs in the first inning and keeping Franklin County off the scoreboard by adding another three runs into third inning and a fourth inning single run, then held on to finish off the opening in the doubleheader in the top of the seventh.
The Jackets finished off Game 1 with a 12-hit performance.
Around 30 minutes later, the Jackets switched into the visitor’s position and ran through another six-run victory, putting up nine more hits and an error.
The Lions got off 10 hits over the total of the two games, but couldn’t get a single runner across home plate during the series.
Rockmart wrapped up the season with a 31-5 record to win their first state title in school history in baseball.
They’ve made deep playoff runs – including a 2019 State Runner-Up and several region championships in AA and AAA play, but this was the season they finally made it to the mountaintop.
Rockmart got there through Salem, Pike County, Callaway and Pierce County for the title matchup on Wednesday in Rome.
