GHSA finalizes region and class realignments, no more split for public-private schools

The good news? The Rockmart Yellow Jackets and Cedartown Bulldogs have their region and classification set until the 2024 football season. The bad news? There’s no more split between Single A public and private schools – though that will matter little to local fans.

The Georgia High School Association gathered for a board meeting on Monday to hear final appeals – including from a team that would have been in a new 7-AA with the Jackets – and made decisions before cementing new classification and region alignments that will start with the 2022 football season.

Cedartown will be staying put in Region 7-AAAA for the time being, being joined by current foes Central Carroll, Heritage-Catoosa, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield. The Bulldogs lose Ridgeland in the region and picked up Sonoraville in the process.

The Ridgeland Panthers moved down into Region 6-AAA as part of a new region alignment for the next two years centered around far Northwest Georgia mainly in Catoosa and Walker Counties, with the exception of a trio of teams: Coahulla Creek, Adairsville and Bremen.

Meanwhile Rockmart ended up in a newly finalized 7-AA that lost Gordon Lee to Region 6-AAA when the Trojans won their appeal on Monday to move up in classification after losing an appeal to move down previously.

Rockmart now faces a lot of travel time on the road with their new region, the two closes teams being Model and Haralson County.

The Jackets now have Fannin County, Gordon Central, Murray County and North Murray as new opponents alongside the other two squads.

Around the area, a new 7-A Division 1 now includes all the traditional Floyd County teams and some traditional opponents from around the area. Armuchee, Chattooga, Coosa, Dade County, Darlington, Pepperell, Dalton Academy and Trion all make up that new region alignment.

The re-aligned 7-AAAAA now is made up of Calhoun, Cartersville, Cass, Dalton, Hiram and Woodland-Cartersville. The re-alignment also impacted the Rome Wolves’ region, as the 6-AAAAAA team has mostly the same opponents: Allatoona, Creekview, Etowah, River Ridge, Sequoyah and Woodstock.

Paulding teams are mainly in a new 5-AAAAAA that includes East, South and Paulding County, along with Alexander, Douglas County, Hughes, New Manchester and Newnan.

North Paulding was put into a region with 3-AAAAAAA.
