The Rockmart Yellow Jackets head into the playoffs with a big opportunity in store as they sit atop the Power Rankings with a No. 1 seed heading into the fight for the Class AA title.
After reclassification in 2023, Class AA was moved to a power ranking system for the playoffs and after they finished on November 1 with a perfect region record for the 8th year in a row, it was looking like Rockmart had cemented a third place power ranking.
However that makeup week on Nov. 8 played a role in changing directions, and now the top-seeded Jackets host the Redan Raiders for Friday night’s opening round game heading into the playoffs.
Rockmart heads into this one with the only two losses on the season against 7-4A area foes Cedartown in the game that took two days to play and a Cartersville rout at season’s opening, but then they moved right into Region 7-AA and took on all comers with a dominant run.
The Jackets will now face a 32nd seeded Redan squad who finished the season with a losing record and barely squeezed into contention thanks to a 1-3 region record, narrowly beating out Salem for the fourth place spot.
Redan is coming into this one on a two-game skid after falling to region champ Columbia and then to South Atlanta to cap the season in 6-AA play.
The Jackets face a squad who gave up 228 points on the season and only mustered 154 on offense with senior quarterback Diddy Jones under center. (Unfortunately as of the time of writing, I was unable to track down any stats on the Raiders season.)
Rockmart hosts the home game on Friday night. Tickets are available via GoFan.
