Rockmart took a 34-6 win over Bremen as teams got back to the gridiron for pre-season play in the opening week of scrimmages in the region.

The Jackets held a 14-0 lead, and extended it with the younger guys getting playing time by another three touchdowns and gave up a score to the Blue Devils in a trip down to Haralson County on Friday night.

Quarterback JD Davis threw one of those touchdowns to Tristan Anderson, and Nahzir Turner punched one in from three yards out in the first half, and another in the second half while the scoreboard was still on from two yards out.

The Jackets also saw Rakaylin Glover pick up a 68-yard touchdown before the fourth quarter saw the two teams go to short-field drills and each side add a score, but no point after attempts. The scoreboard went off with the Jackets still way ahead of the Blue Devils in terms of points.

While the touchdowns are fun to watch, they don’t count toward stats and adding wins to the record sheet since this is pre-season. Week 1 pre-season play is all about finding and fixing issues in the offense and defense before the schemes go into play for live football.

The Jackets will have to work on a few items on the list before the team heads to Rome next Friday for their second scrimmage ahead of the start of the regular season at Cedartown. Rockmart’s offensive line did allow some opportunities for Blue Devil “sacks” (touches count as a tackle against a quarterback during scrimmages, but during live game situations these likely would have turned into positive yardage for Davis rushing forward and keeping plays alive.)

Rockmart’s defense also gave up easy yardage in the first half due to encroachment calls almost back-to-back, and a personal foul call bought the Blue Devils a first down.

Don’t fret, there’s plenty of time to get the ball rolling in the right direction for Rockmart heading into Rome on August 10, and before the season kicks off at Cedartown on August 18.
