Alumni from Cedartown and Rockmart were part of the opening weekend of college football on various levels across the southeast and the country, and they continued to show off the skills they were recruited and known for during their playing time as a Bulldog and Yellow Jacket locally.
Maybe the most high-profile game of the week between the Clemson Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs featured one of Cedartown’s own, though not in the Black and Red.
Sophomore Kobe Pace put up a seven-yard performance on four carries for Clemson and caught a six-yard pass against the No. 5 Bulldogs over the weekend in Georgia’s 10-3 win over the Tigers.
Here’s some others who are still playing college ball on rosters during the season openers this past weekend:
Tony Mathis Jr., who is still a red-shirt sophomore for West Virginia, but didn’t get into the game with Maryland as the Mountaineers took a 30-24 loss on the road in College Park this past Saturday. He did however end his 2020 season with six games under his belt and had 18 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown.
East Carolina Pirates wide receiver Taji Hudson didn’t play in 2020 and was on the sidelines again when the team took the field against Appalachian State in a 33-19 loss on the road to open the season.
Zah Frazier – who recently got an offer from the University of Tennessee – helped the Red Ravens overcome a national champion over the weekend. He was part of a 17-10 victory over Hutchinson Community College to open the season in Kansas.
Jayden Johnson now at Arkansas got playing time on Saturday in the Razorbacks opener at home with a 38-17 victory over Rice. He’s a freshman defensive back for the SEC West school after graduating last year.
Point University junior Quan Neal was with the team in a 69-0 loss to Mercer to open the season on Sept. 2. Subsequently, the Sept. 11 game against Campbellsville has been canceled.
Rockmart alum Javin Whatley started his first season with the UTC Mocs in Chattanooga this weekend. He’ll be on the field as a wide receiver, but got no playing time in a Mocs loss to Austin Peay 30-20.
Rockmart alum Jourdan Rachel, now at Shorter as a sophomore, had eight rushing yards over the weekend with three carries as the Hawks took a 38-14 victory over Brevard College.
Darlington alum and Cedartown native Joe Marion also was on the roster as an Outside Linebacker for the Hawks, but didn’t have any stats against in the opening game as a freshman on the team.
Trevon Wofford at UPike and a Senior Quarterback hasn’t started his season yet, but he’s set to play starting on Sept. 18 when the squad opens against Bluefield College after having their opener against St. Thomas University (Florida) called off.
