Cedartown Wheelchair racing set to return after two-year hiatus on June 30

It’s been a long time since wheelchair athletes have made their way to Cedartown, but the two-year hiatus is over as the Cedartown Wheelchair 5K Road Race returns on June 30 to College Street.

The flags of nations from around the world are lining College Street around the course, which will remain the same as it has in years past. (See the map below for positions you might want to take up.)

The month-end race will include the one-day camp, with athletes coming to town for the camp and race ahead of the Peachtree Road Race for 2022 starting with arrivals on June 28, and the camp to follow on June 29.

The race kicks off at 6 p.m. on June 30, with the start-finish line at Peek Park once again.

Road closures this year will begin at 5 p.m. with a number of areas shut down for drivers. Those first sections will shut down around Mundy’s (Springdale) Lake, with College Street, and Martha Lane fully closing at 6 p.m.

Portions from West Girard Avenue to Jule Peek Avenue shut down starting at 4 p.m.

Head organizer Dave Grove said volunteers are ready to accommodate this year’s batch of racers, which are down from years past as costs have risen for athletes to travel.

Racers will also be wheeling around the area of the course practicing for the June 30 event on June 29, and will be in other designated areas for preparing. Those include the area around Peek Park, and down West Girard Avenue to The HON Company facility and back.

The race is free for the public to enjoy.
