BREAKING: COVID-19 numbers force PSD to call off Rockmart at Cedartown football game Friday

No plans to make up game at this time

The Polk School District announced this afternoon that because of growing number of COVID-19 cases within the Cedartown Bulldogs football squad, the game is being called off for 2021.

This is the first time in 79 years the two teams haven’t played one another in the rivalry showdown known as The Battle of Polk County. With records immediately available from the Georgia High School Football Historians Association, the last time the two teams didn’t meet was in 1942 while the nation was in the midst of World War II.

Cedartown was set to come into the game with a 1-0 record and Rockmart an 0-1 record after the Bulldogs won their first outing of the season against Denmark last week, and the Jackets fell to Rome at The Rock.

From the PSD:

Out of an abundance of caution and concern, the Cedartown vs. Rockmart game will not be played Friday, August 27. Based on current COVID numbers and pending test results affecting the Cedartown High School football team, we feel that it would be irresponsible to move forward. While Cedartown High School’s positivity rate remains low at 1.26%, the football team has a current positivity rate of 8.64%. As such, the football program will suspend practices and games for a ten-day period beginning this afternoon. These decisions are never easy but are always made in the best interest of the safety of our students, staff, and in this case, the Polk County community. We appreciate your understanding and partnership.

Per Superintendent Dr. Katie Thomas, there are not yet plans to try to reschedule the game.
