The Rockmart Yellow Jackets boys basketball squad are back in action this week as the state tournament gets underway on Wednesday night at home.
Jacket Nation is being called upon to fill the stands on Wednesday for the 7 p.m. tipoff with the Walker Wolverines out of 6-AA with an evenly-matched squad for the 2023-24 Playoffs.
Rockmart finished in second place in 7-AA to secure a home playoff spot after going 20-7 through the regular season and ultimately finished at 8-4 in region play (third place,) but region tournament wins propped up their spot and gave them home court advantage heading into the Class AA tourney.
The Jackets topped Fannin County in the first game of the region tournament last week, but fell to Model to take the runner-up spot for the year.
Treylin Davis was named the 7-AA Player of the Year for his 24.2 points per average senior season, and putting up 606 points overall during the regular season and region tourney. He played in 25 games (serving a 2-game suspension in recent weeks, including one game against rival Cedartown.)
Rockmart will need Davis and the rest of their shooters like Sam Johnson playing perfect on Wednesday as they face a Wolverines squad who are coming to play.
Walker comes into the tournament opener with a 19-8 record and going 14-2 in region play, but despite topping 6-AA got themselves in trouble during their region tournament and secured a third seed into the Class AA playoffs after a loss to South Atlanta, and a win over Drew Charter.
Rockmart will have to work to stop Anderson Carey, Noah Pederson and Moustapha Diop on the Wolverines offense and defense to pick up the win and continue on in the tournament.
Check back for more coverage from Rockmart’s forthcoming game on Thursday.
