SOFTBALL: Lady Jackets fall to Morgan Co., but have chance at redemption against 7-AA champ

This one seems made for the movies coming up on Thursday evening.

Rockmart made it to Columbus, but fell in a 2-1 matchup against Morgan County in the opening round of the state tournament for the Class AA championship for 2024. Today’s game marked the first loss since taking back-to-back region Ls against Sonoraville and North Cobb Christian earlier in the month.

Since then, the Lady Jackets were perfect until they ran into the Lady Bulldogs this afternoon.

Rockmart has a chance at redemption coming up on Thursday evening as they take the field against Sonoraville in the loser’s bracket at 5 p.m.

The Lady Jackets can fight their way back into the big game if they can overtake Sonoraville in the coming round, then face the loser of the Appling-Stephens game. The next round would be between the winner of the Pike County-Miller Grove game and the loser of the Union County-Morgan County game.

Those games would take place on Friday, and then if they get further it’d be into Saturday and a semis matchup potential for the Polk squad used to making it deep into the the Columbus tournament.

First they have to overcome the Phoenix.

Rockmart faced Sonoraville twice in the regular season, falling in both matchups. The Lady Jackets were swept in the early season in a 8-0 rout, then fell 5-2 in an Oct. 7 region showdown. The Lady Phoenix won out in the region, while Rockmart took second.

Union County moved onto the next round after pushing into the playoffs and making it through to Columbus and now have Rockmart’s opening foe next up.

That made three teams from 7-AA to take road trips to Columbus this year.
