FOOTBALL: Jackets tackle second half comeback in win over North Cobb Christian

Jacket Nation is going to run out of fingers for the number of region titles Rockmart has racked up over nearly a decade of play under head coach Biff Turner.

And they are set to cruise to an 8th title in a row (looking for their sixth in 7-AA this season) after a win over the team most likely to topple their reign this past Friday against North Cobb Christian.

Rockmart initially were on the ropes in the first half, giving up a 21-3 deficit going into the locker room against the Eagles offense who had scored three touchdowns against an otherwise stingy Jacket defense.

Then the turnaround came as Rockmart battled back and Nate Davis punched in three scores on the ground, and was responsible for two turnovers on the night that included a first quarter interception to cut short an NCC drive, and a fourth quarter fumble recovered by Camaal Williams.

Luke and Hagen Sharp both took turns under center in the game, and though didn’t have as many opportunities to pass against the NCC defense did make some headway including a first down third quarter reception to Tristan Anderson that setup the first touchdown of the night in Davis’ hands.

Rockmart overcame the Eagles and ran out the clock on the game in the 24-21 victory, moving on in region play and hosting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe this Friday at The Rock to extend their region undefeated streak.

The win over NCC all but cemented the Jackets region title as they have LFO, Murray County and North Murray up on the schedule for the final three games of the regular season. The final two games in 7-AA play for the season are on the road at Murray County and North Murray.

The Mountaineers are the only team with a shot at upsetting the apple cart as they stand third in the region at the moment.

Rockmart no matter what happens secured a home playoff spot with the October 11 win.

The victory also marked another big occasion this past Friday: the Jackets extended their region streak to 56 games in a row. They haven’t lost a region contest since an October 2016 game against Pepperell where the Dragons came out on top 31-10. Since then, the Jackets have been perfect in region play and taken the seven titles in a row – 5 in 7-AA, and 2 in 6-AAA while Rockmart was moved up for two years in classification.

Rockmart last year made a run to the state title game off of a region title victory and top seeding into the Class AA playoffs. They went 2-2 in non-region games to open the season and then went onto win 10 in a row before falling to Pierce County in the title game.

The Jackets close out region play and the regular season on Nov. 1 against the Mountaineers, then get a week off before the playoffs begin after the GHSA decision to push back a week to help those schools impacted by Hurricane Helene.
