FOOTBALL: Dawgs hosting Cambridge to open playoffs

Cedartown will have a tough road ahead if they hope to make it to the big show at season’s end at The Benz.

Their first test is coming up on Friday night when the Cambridge Bears come to the Doc for the first meeting of the two teams in school history.

Cedartown rolls into the game with a 9-1 record under their belt, a second place finish in Region 7-4A, and a defense who gave up less than 100 points for the entire season.

Yet there’s a reason why Cambridge could be a first round spoil sport for the Dawgs, because the Bears? They are a decent team.

Playing in Region 6-4A, Cambridge’s only two losses on the season came in a two touchdown loss to Kell, and an overtime loss by three to Blessed Trinity to upset what was otherwise a perfect season – including a win over the perennial threat to everyone’s fun Calhoun.

The Bears 8-2 season came with 339 points scored, but they gave up 228 on the year as the barely held off Denmark in a one point win (35-34) and gave up 36 to Westminster in another narrow win.

They’ll need to step up their game if they hope to stop the Dawgs running attack with the likes of Tae Harris, Michel Gibbons Jr., Juelz Davis and others available in the ranks of the rushing attack.

Whether Isaiah Johnson’s ankle will be healthy enough for a passing attack to work out is another story entirely, and the Bulldogs might have to rely on Wyatt Mosley in the backfield to take over for the opening round of the playoffs.

Cedartown will be facing a first tough test in the Class AAAA playoffs, but it is a test they’ll need if they hope to advance. Central Carroll would be the next likely opponent for Cedartown if they win on Friday night.

First, they have to go 1-0 in a new season.
