Edgar Chandler

Late October will be a time to celebrate for Polk County as one of the area’s big football heroes from yesteryear is set to be inducted in the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame.

Chandler, a graduate of Cedartown High and a member of the 1963 State Championship squad, played under Vince Dooley as part of his first recruiting class at Georgia, the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, and the WFL Birmingham Americans (who won a title with Chandler as a offensive lineman in his only year with the team in 1974.)

The former NFL star who played for six seasons as a pro passed away in 1992 at the age of 46.

Chandler is being inducted into the state’s High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 26 along with other new members in the Class of 2024.

He has also been memorialized in the local Sports Walk of Fame. A statue of Chandler stands in the Sports Walk of Fame next door to the Doug Sanders Golf Museum in downtown Cedartown.

Here’s more about the announcement shared on social media by Cedartown Football:

Chandler was a three-sport athlete during his time at CHS, playing football, basketball and participating in track and field.

He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame with the Class of 1988, and was selected to the all-time University of Georgia football team in 1999.
